Ireland’s Thomas Ryan produced a fantastic double clear performance to claim victory in this afternoon’s hotly contested Hyatt Hotels International Grand Prix on the closing day of the Millstreet International Horse Show. Riding Simone Aschwanden’s ten year old stallion Quite Zero, the Thurles-born twenty nine year old was making his return to Millstreet after a gap of 12 years and knew that he had to be clear to take the title. ‘He’s an extremely careful horse and this is only his second Grand Prix” commented Ryan who is based in Switzerland. “The faster he goes, the better he jumps!” One of only eight riders to jump clear in the first round, Thomas went on to finish three seconds ahead of last year’s champion, Great Britain’s Ellen Whitaker, who picked up a single time fault in the jump-off after a faultless first round performance with Le Beau. Holly Gillott heads back to Leicestershire with a share of the €50,000 prize fund after finishing in third position with Dougie Douglas, an Irish Sport horse she co-owns with Graham Smith.
The Green Glens Arena has been a hive of activity all week, with over 8,000 entries received across 109 competitions and a record 1,200 horses stabled on site. Earlier today, Ger O’ Neill continued his winning form by taking the Millstreet Ruby Final title with Sharon Fitzpatrick’s Ard Ginger Pop. With Sharon’s daughter Susan currently taking some time off after her bronze medal winning performance at the recent FEI European Championships for Ponies, O’ Neill was offered the ride on the five year old Luidam mare who he describes as “brave and intelligent”. Meanwhile, Cork man Billy Twomey took pole position in the Boomerang Final by jumping a superb double clear with Codarco. The seven year old stallion is a former National Discovery champion and was brought up the ranks by Thomas O’ Brien. Twomey finished just ahead of British rider Laura Renwick and her OBOS Quality mare Washingtonn IX.
Earlier in the week, the Irish Farmer’s Journal Young Irelander Final provided a display of some of the finest three year old horses seen by the judges in recent years. Michael Florence, Tony Newbury and Rowland Farneyhough called back three horses to re-perform as they were tied for the lead. In the end, they decided that Yana Verling’s Ars Vivendi mare Larav Vendi should take the title – an announcement that was greeted with tumultous applause by the 3,000 strong audience. The following evening’s Irish Field National Discovery Final was equally popular with visitors to Millstreet and a full house witnessed Linda Courtney reclaim the title with her four year old Indoctro gelding LCC Empty Pockets. In a new initiative for 2014, an Elite Foal sale was held on Saturday evening with ten pre-selected foals parading before the National Discovery class and being put up for auction afterwards. The sale attracted a lot of interest with €15,000 exchanging hands for the top lot on the night, an OBOS Quality colt with links to MHS Going Global.
Speaking at the conclusion of six days of competition, event director Thomas Duggan declared the week’s proceedings to be a resounding success. “We saw some great up and coming talent from across Europe at last week’s FEI European Championships for Ponies and it has been very promising to see so many of our young Irish riders coming to the fore this week. A lot of our International visitors are making Millstreet an integral part of their competition schedule and we are already starting to plan for our 2015 show.”

Thomas Ryan wins Millstreet International Grand Prix
Opening days of Millstreet 2014
Ireland’s Daniel Coyle clinched victory in the first International class of the week at the Millstreet International Horse Show on Thursday. Riding Conor Coyle’s Athlet Van’t Lozerhof, the three time Spring Tour Champion repeated his 2013 performance and posted a superb clear in the Horse Sport Ireland sponsored qualifier for Sunday’s €50,000 Grand Prix. Meath-based rider Alexander Butler finished just behind him with Michael Leddy’s Monastery Stud More Pleasure while Great Britain’s Laura Renwick took the third position on the podium after posting a clear round with David Rogers’ Rembrandt Blue.
On a day where riders and spectators endured a series of heavy rain showers Renwick proceeded to light up the Green Glens Arena with her performance in the Slaney Foods International 2 Phase class. Riding for John and Marian Renwick, the Essex rider steered Beluga to victory to post the first British win of the week, just in front of Ireland’s Richard Howley with Jennifer Ireland’s Hazel.
The Green Glens Arena has been a hive of activity this week, with over 8,000 entries received across 109 competitions. Competition got underway with a series of National and young horse classes on Tuesday and Wednesday. The National Eventing Discovery on Tuesday featured many of the fences that formed a part of the Cross Country course at the recent FEI European Championships for Ponies. These posed no problem for Bandon rider Allan McSweeney with his stalwart Rock a Bye Balladeer in the Six Year Old section. Visiting judge Rowland Fernyhough was joined by Kate Jarvey to assess the suitability of the horses entered in the 4 and 5 year old sections with the Five Year Old class going the way of Jason Higgins and the Michael Meade owned Shannondale Julia. In the Four Year Old section, Christopher Hunt took home the ribbons with Patrick Meagher’s Royal Luxor.
Fresh from a busy week at the Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show, Billy Twomey made a welcome return to Millstreet and took pole position in Wednesday’s Dennany Reidy and Associates Boomerang Qualifier by jumping a superb clear with Codarco. The seven year old stallion is a former National Discovery champion and was brought up the ranks by Thomas O’ Brien. Earlier in the day, Ger O’ Neill recorded his first victory of the week with Sharon Fitzpatrick’s Ard Ginger Pop in the first Millstreet Ruby Qualifier for 5 year olds. Daniel Coyle took the honours in the second qualifier with Conor Coyle’s Harakiri Z.
The action continues at Millstreet until Sunday with plenty of top class International and National competitions still to come. Of the 8 International classes (including three Longines World Ranking classes), the €50,000 Millstreet International Grand Prix is the main highlight, taking place on Sunday 17th August.
This evening’s Irish Farmer’s Journal Young Irelander Final looks set to be one of the strongest showcases of three year old horses in recent years while Saturday’s Irish Field sponsored National Discovery Final will also provide a fascinating insight into the International showjumping horses of the future. In another innovation for Millstreet International Horse Show, 2014 sees the introduction of an Elite Foal Sale which will be held on Saturday evening. The aim of the sale is to create a platform for Irish breeders to showcase their stock and to present buyers with the unique opportunity to buy a high class foal. The foals, which were pre-selected for the sale, are each from a proven show jumping performance family, including links to MHS Going Global, Electric Cruise, TKS Timeline, Diamond Exchange, Kilcoltrim, Castlepollard and Dorada. The foals will be paraded before the National Discovery class in the Main Indoor Arena with the sale following later that evening.
Speaking at the Rider’s Welcome Reception, event director Thomas Duggan extended a warm welcome to all the riders that have travelled to Millstreet, particularly those who had travelled from abroad. “Millstreet International Horse Show comes on the back of a highly successful FEI European Championships for Ponies where our younger riders truly excelled. I’m looking forward to more great competition this weekend.”

The Stage is Set for Millstreet 2014!
Final preparations are being made at the Green Glens Arena in Millstreet, Co. Cork this evening in advance of the 2014 Millstreet International Horse Show (CSI***), taking place from 12th – 17th August. Following on from the successful hosting of the 2014 FEI European Championships for Ponies just seven days ago, a 20% increase in entries means that the stage is set for another busy week of International competition. Over 1,200 horses will be stabled on site and competitors have travelled from as far as Great Britain, Canada, Spain, South Africa, Thailand and Switzerland to compete this week.
The International classes across the week are likely to provide strong competition. The home team features many of Ireland’s top ranked show-jumpers including Cian O’ Connor, Billy Twomey, Dermott Lennon and Clem McMahon. Fresh from their superb performances in the Land Rover Puissance at the Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show, Michael Hutchinson and Alexander Butler will also be strong contenders during the week. As well as many of the other top showjumping riders in the country, they will be joined by Nation’s Cup rider Capt. Michael Kelly, leading National Hunt jockey and Hickstead 2013 Speed Derby winner Robert Power and HSI/Connolly’s RED MILLS Spring Tour Champion Daniel Coyle. A strong International contingent will be making the journey across the Irish Sea, including Anna Edwards and Ellen Whitaker – both previous winners of the Millstreet International Grand Prix. Ellen will be joined by three other members of the legendary Whitaker family while others set to travel to Millstreet include Laura Renwick, Holy Gillott and Douglas Duffin.
The show will feature 110 classes running over six days, with a total prize fund in excess of €190,000. An additional day has been added to the schedule to facilitate the growth of the National Eventing Discovery Classes which will follow their now-established format on the opening day. Once again, Ireland’s top event horse riders and producers will compete over many of the fences that formed a part of the European Championship track for a prize fund of €4,000. Of the 8 International classes (including three Longines World Ranking classes), the €50,000 Millstreet International Grand Prix is the main highlight, taking place on Sunday 17th August.
Away from the International action, Millstreet’s commitment to supporting the Irish equestrian industry continues, with a strong entry received for young horse classes including the Boomerang, National Discovery, Young Irelander and Millstreet Ruby. Many of the best equestrian producers in the country are represented in the Young Irelander Final for three year old horses. Adrian Marsh, David Harrison and Robert Fagan who officiated at the selection days all commented on the quality of the horses. Qualifiers were held at Millstreet, Mullingar and the West Cork Breeders Show. Those qualified will now compete on Thursday August 14th and the top twenty will go through to Friday night’s prestigious final. Former Olympic Showjumper Roland Ferneyhough will be on hand along with last year’s judges Tony Newbery and Mike Florence to judge the winners of all our special classes.
In another innovation for Millstreet International Horse Show, 2014 sees the introduction of an Elite Foal Sale which will be held on Saturday 16th August.
The Millstreet Horse Show Organising Committee continue to support younger riders who are catered for with a host of pony classes; including Ireland’s richest Pony Grand Prix with a prize fund of €4,500. Young Riders will once again have the opportunity to win a training bursary with Irish Olympic Showjumper Billy Twomey through the Hitchmough Bursary, which will be decided on Sunday in the Main International Arena.
